A first case of infection with the new variant of the mpox virus, which caused a major epidemic in Africa, has been confirmed in Germany, announced the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). This case, detected on October 18, 2024, concerns the clade 1b variant, contracted abroad. The RKI believes that the risk to public health in Germany remains low, but it is monitoring the situation carefully.
Mpox is spread by close physical contact. Formerly called monkeypox, this virus is transmitted from animals to humans, and also between humans, causing fever, muscle pain and skin lesions.
For several months, a new epidemic has been affecting Africa, with the highest infection figures found in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Nigeria. In response, a vaccination campaign was launched at the beginning of October in the DRC, the country most affected by this virus globally.
